안양공공미술예술제에 출품한 쿠사마 작품 

금세기 최고의 작가, 쿠사마 야요이아시아 최초(일본제외)로 대구미술관에서 대규모 개인전 가져 - 2013년 7월 16일~11월 3일까지 신작 30여점 포함해 117여점의 작품 선보여- 정신병, 동양인, 여성이라는 편견을 이겨내고 우리시대를 대표하는 최고의 아티스트가 된 쿠사마 야요이- 강박, 환영, 물방울 무늬, 무한공간, 무한증식의 키워드를 통해 현실 너머 무한 세계를 갈구하는 그녀- 2013년 전시 <KUSAMA YAYOI : A Dream I Dreamed> 

대구미술관 기획으로 중국, 대만, 인도, 마카오 투어 예정 2013년 개관 2주년을 맞이한 대구미술관(관장 김선희)은 대구와 한국의 미술을 조명하고 동시대 국제현대미술의 중요한 동향을 소개하는 기획전을 선보이고 있다. 2013년 7월에는 일본출신의 ‘금세기 최고의 작가’라 불리는 쿠사마 야요이(1929 草間彌生) 개인전을 연다. 

일본을 제외한 아시아 최초의 미술관 전시로 대구미술관이 기획해 아시아 대표도시인 상하이, 타이페이, 뉴델리, 마카오 등을 2013년 ~ 2015년에 걸쳐 순회할 예정이다. 한국에서 10여년만의 개인전으로 열릴 이번 전시는 신작 30여점을 포함해 대표작 117점을 어미홀과 1, 3, 4, 5 전시실, 선큰가든(총 규모 3,300㎡정도) 등지에서 선보인다. 

일본에서 태어난 쿠사마는 전쟁, 엄격한 어머니, 아버지의 방탕, 가정의 파산을 겪으면서 암울한 어린 시절을 보냈다. 환청에서 시작된 정신분열 증상은 점차 환영으로 나타났고 10살부터는 그것을 스케치북에 옮기기 시작했다. “예술가가 되고자 한 것은 아니었다. 벽면을 타고 끊임없이 증식해가는 하얀 좁쌀 같은 것들을 벽에서 끄집어내어 스케치북에 옮겨 확인하고 싶었다.”는 그녀는 무의식적인 예술치료를 통해 마음의 안식을 얻었다. 

정신병 환자로 전락할 수 있었지만 본인을 예술가의 경지로 끌어올린 쿠사마는 일본, 미국을 오가며 작품활동을 했고, 이러한 시간을 통해 다양한 사념, 예술적 매재를 수용, 자신의 영역을 구분 짓지 않는 끊임없는 증식을 스스로 감행했다. 광기를 창조로 발전시켜 무한의 자아를 찾아낸 그녀는 회화뿐만 아니라 설치와 환경작업 그리고 퍼포먼스에도 영역을 넓혔고 소설과 시집 그리고 영화에도 자신의 이름을 새겼다. 

쿠사마 야요이의 작품을 대규모로 볼 수 있는 대구미술관 <KUSAMA YAYOI: A Dream I Dreamed> 전시는 현실 너머의 무한세계, 영원한 삶을 꿈꾸는 작가의 작업개념을 함축적으로 표현하는 물방울 무늬, 거울, 풍선, 전구 등을 소재로 한 설치작품과 조각, 관람객 참여를 유도해 작업개념을 체험적으로 이해할 수 있는 인터렉티브 작업 등 작가의 대표작을 보여준다. 더불어 84세 작가의 최근작 <My Eternal Soul>시리즈 30여점도 만날 수 있다.

The Centre Pompidou is presenting the first French retrospective dedicated to the Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama: chronologically following her career through 150 works created between 1949 and 2001, the exhibition tracks the major moments in the life of the artist and illustrates the protean character (paintings, sculptures, environments, performances) of a collection of works which Kusama has herself described as "obsessional". Strongly rooted in a childhood memory, a hallucination from which she developed the polka dot motif, this unclassified work still has significant influence on the cotemporary scene. Yayoi Kusama's Ascension of Polka Dots on the Trees at the Singapore Biennale 2006 on Orchard Road, Singapore.Yayoi Kusama (草間 彌生 or 草間 弥生, Kusama Yayoi?, born March 22, 1929 in Matsumoto, Nagano Prefecture) is a Japanese artist whose paintings, collages, soft sculptures, performance art and environmental installations all share an obsession with repetition, pattern, and accumulation. (She has described herself as an "obsessive artist".)

Kusama's work is based in Conceptual art and shows some attributes of feminism, minimalism, surrealism, Art Brut, pop art, and abstract expressionism, and is infused with autobiographical, psychological, and sexual content. Kusama is also a published novelist and poet, and has created notable work in film and fashion design. She has long struggled with mental illness. On November 12, 2008 Christies New York sold a work by her for $5.1 million, a record for a living female artist. 

Yayoi Kusama said about her 1954 painting titled Flower (D.S.P.S), "One day I was looking at the red flower patterns of the tablecloth on a table, and when I looked up I saw the same pattern covering the ceiling, the windows and the walls, and finally all over the room, my body and the universe. I felt as if I had begun to self-obliterate, to revolve in the infinity of endless time and the absoluteness of space, and be reduced to nothingness. As I realized it was actually happening and not just in my imagination, I was frightened. I knew I had to run away lest I should be deprived of my life by the spell of the red flowers. I ran desperately up the stairs. The steps below me began to fall apart and I fell down the stairs straining my ankle"
