백남준, 유엔(United Nations)보다 훨씬 빠르고 훨씬 유능한 세계연합(United World) 구축 // 위성아트로 칭기즈칸보다 더 넓은 땅 차지한 디지털 노마드

칭기즈칸이 무력으로 유럽을 정복했지만 백남준은 문화로 유럽을 정복했다. 백남준은 칭기즈칸보다 더 잔인하고 탐욕적인 정복자이다. 인공위성유목민 백남준은 엄청난 영토를 차지했다. 가상세계와 최첨단전자위성의 상상력은 너무 크고 넓고 깊다.

다만 그런 영토를 넘어서는 문화정복자다. 그는 보이는 땅을 차지하는 것이 아니라 인공위성 보이지 않는 땅을 정복한 그보다 더 위대한 인물을 한반도에도 없다. 세계적으로 그렇다. 미술계에서 피카는 물론이고 앤디워홀보다 한수 위다. 다만 그가 한반도출신이라는 것 때문에 제대로 평가를 받지 못할 뿐이다. 그의 유일한 라이벌은 마르셀 뒤샹이다. 그렇지만 백남준은 그를 "비디오 빼고 다 했다"며 은근히 공격했다. 왜냐하면 20세기에서 비디오를 빼면 그게 무슨 예술인가를 비꼰 말이다. 그러나 그는 전혀 예술가인 양 하는 것을 싫어했다. "난 문화계 속물을 가장 싫다." 예술가인 척 하는 것을 싫어했다. 그에게는 일체의 권위주의가 없다. 그러나 정말 권위가 있다.

백남준은 단군 이래 백남준은 모든 면에서 기록을 깬 사람이다. 한국인중 5개 국어에 능통한 예술가가 있었던가. 이경희여사는 백남준과 유치원동창생인데 같이 캐딜락을 같이 타고 다녔다고 말했지만 그는 한국에서 그보다 부자로 살아본 사람은 없다. 그보다 더 공부를 많이 한 사람은 없다. 그보다 더 지적인 사람은 없다. 그처럼 17살 젊은 나이에 비자(비자번호7번)를 받은 사람도 없으리라.

그는 또한 동학운동 100년에 된 1984년 새해 첫날밤 우주오페라 삼부작 1편 <굿모닝 미스터 오웰> 뉴욕 파리를 인공위성으로 연결하는 퍼포먼스 생중계 등을 전 세계 2천5 백만 명(?) 시청하게 하는 기록을 세웠다. 1986년 아시안게임과 1988년 서울올림픽이 그래서 가능했다. 그가 미국국적을 가지고 애국주의를 매우 싫어했지만 그만큼 애국을 많이 한 사람도 없다.

그는 1992년 이어령씨가 문화부장관을 만나러갔을 때 사전에 말도 없이 랜덤액세스방식으로 수위실을 찾아갔다가 그의 허술한 복장과 행색때문에 쫓겨났다. 1993년 베니스비엔날레 기간에 백남준과 이우환이 비슷한 시기에 전시회가 열렸는데 이우환전시장에 갔다가 화랑바닥에 누워 자다가 외부인인 줄 알고 쫓겨날 뻔했다. 그만큼 그는 외모나 형식에 얽매이지 않았다. 누구는 그것을 그의 전략이라고도 한다. 아니 자신감이다. 그런 것에 아예 무시한다.
