양혜규는 11월 28일 내셔널 갤러리 싱가포르(National Gallery Singapore)의 ‘아웃바운드(OUTBOUND)’ 시리즈에 초청되어 새로운 설치작 <드론 연설을 위한 포럼 – 싱가포르 시뮬레이션(Forum for Drone Speech – Singapore Simulations)>을 선보인다. 내셔널 갤러리 싱가포르는 영국 식민지 시기에 건립된 두 청사, 시청(1929년)과 대법원(1939년) 건물을 개조∙통합시킨 역사적 건물로 2015년 개관 이래 싱가포르의 대표 국립미술관으로 기능하고 있다.

지난 해부터 시작된 연례 커미션 프로젝트 ‘아웃바운드’는 미술관 건물의 역사적 배경을 반추하고 예술을 보다 폭넓게 향유하기 위해 전세계에서 활발히 활동하는 현대미술 작가들을 초청해 미술관 내 다양한 공용 공간에 장소특정적 작업을 설치한다. 특히 양혜규의 작품이 설치되는 구 시청 건물은 1959년 싱가포르 독립 선언이 낭독된 곳이자 정치∙사회∙문화적으로 중요한 공공장소로 기능해온 ‘파당(Padang; 평지, ~장을 일컫는 말레이어)’을 맞은편에 면하고 있어 과거와 현재, 역사와 문화, 사회를 아우르는 양혜규의 다층적 작업과 직접적으로 소통한다.

양혜규의 <드론 연설을 위한 포럼 – 싱가포르 시뮬레이션>은 미술관의 역사에 대한 사전 조사와 자료 수집을 바탕으로 실제와 허구, 자연과 인공, 과거와 현재가 다감각적 경험을 통해 조우하는 혼성의 설치 작업이다. 기본 골조를 이루는 모조 대리석의 기하학적 구조물은 세로 홈이 패인 원통형 기둥, 반원 아치, 피라미드 등 신고전주의 건축 양식으로 장식된 대리석 건물의 물리적 환경을 반영한다. 구조물 상단을 휘어 돌며 가로지르는 금속 격자망에는 홀로그램 필름지에 프린트된 일련의 흑백 아카이브 이미지들이 펼쳐진다.

영국 식민지 시대의 싱가포르에서 활동한 영국인 조각가 도라 고딘(Dora Gordine)의 작품이자 구 시청에 전시되기도 했던 다문화적 청동 두상, 이탈리안 건축가 루돌포 놀리(Cavalieri Rudolfo Nolli)가 제작한 구 대법원 건물의 건축 장식을 비롯해 공예품, 광고와 같은 사회∙문화적 매개체 등을 아우르는 이미지들은 해당 이미지의 설치 위치와는 무관하게 구조물 위에 자유롭게 부착된 라벨을 통해 사실적-주관적으로 설명된다. 작가는 미술관이 사물이 끊임없이 재배열∙재해석되는, 대안적 서사에 대한 상상을 가능케 하는 공간임에 주목하며, 정체성과 소속감, 관계에 대한 질문을 자극한다.

함께 설치된 3점의 ‘중간 유형’과 ‘소리 나는 조각’은 각각 인공 짚풀, 방울, 무동력 흡출기 등이 공예와 산업, 전통과 현대, 기술과 문화의 결합을 형용하는 동시에 소리와 바람, 움직임과 변화의 가능성을 시사한다. 이외에도 전시장에는 구조물에 설치된 LED 스피커를 통해 실제 소리가 흘러나오기도 한다.

지난 2018년 남북 정상회담에서 남북한의 지도자가 도보다리 끝에 앉아 담소를 나누는 중계영상에서 추출한 새소리 음향과 난양공과대학(NTU)에서 개발한 휴머노이드 로봇 나딘이 6개 국어로 연설하는 목소리는 흔히 대립항으로 설정되는 자연과 인간, 기술과 정치∙역사의 복합적인 공존을 도모하며 공간에 청각적 입체감을 더한다. 양혜규의 <드론 연설을 위한 포럼 – 싱가포르 시뮬레이션>은 역사와 문명을 포괄하는 유기적이고도 입체적인 환경을 구축하여 공간을 다감각적 경험의 장으로 변모시킨다. 이번 작품은 향후 3년간 전시된다.

시뮬레이션은 갤러리의 건축과 싱가포르의 식민지 시대와 이분법 사회와의 연결에서 영감을 얻었다. 이 시설은 구 시청사 건물 (현재 시청 Wing)과 대화를 하기 위해 양식을 그린 유럽 신고전주의 건축 양식을 암시한다. 이 역사적인 건물은 1965 년 독립 선언문을 포함하여 많은 국가의 이정표를 목격했다.

Simulations is inspired by the Gallery’s architecture and its connections to Singapore’s colonial past and diasporic society. The installation alludes to European neo-classical architecture, drawing on its forms to create a conversation with the former Municipal Building (now City Hall Wing). This historic building witnessed many of the nation’s milestones, including its eventual proclamation of independence in 1965.

The labels on the faux marble structure playfully appropriate museological language, interweaving factual introductions of artefacts with Yang’s subjective readings of them. The viewer needs to match these labels with images ranging from Dora Gordine’s multi-ethnic bronze busts, which were first displayed at this site, to works relating to the building's history by Italian sculptor Rudolfo Nolli, and various instruments used to navigate and perceive the world.

Three sculptures by Yang here appear as incongruous as the selection of artefacts, combining traditional crafts with modern industrial processes and materials. They are displayed as static museum pieces yet evoke movement and sound through bells and turbine vents, while recordings of birdsong and a speech by humanoid robot Nadine in six languages play from two loudspeakers.

Forum for Drone Speech – Singapore Simulations expresses a sense that history and the present are in flux. The illusory qualities of the materials used, including faux marble, hologram prints and robotic voice, suggest that different realities are at play. This work creates an awareness of museums as spaces where objects are continually rearranged and reinterpreted to envision alternative narratives, provoking questions on identity, belongingness and engagement.
