[이우환] 베를린 함부르거반호프 국립미술관에서 내년 3월 10일까지

한국 단색화의 거장이자 일본 모노하 운동의 선구자인 이우환의 50년 예술활동을 아우르는 대규모 회고전으로, 50여 점의 회화, 조각, 설치 등을 선보인다.

전시는 자연 고유의 재료인 돌, 흙 등과 산업 재료인 강철, 캔버스 등으로 구성되어 개별 요소들의 유동적인 관계를 탐구하는 〈관계항〉 연작을 비롯해 대표적인 단색화 작업 〈점으로부터〉, 〈선으로부터〉 등 작가의 주요작을 소개한다.

특히 대형 설치작 〈관계항(Relatum)–The Mirror Road〉(2016/2023)는 베를린 국립회화관 소장품인 렘브란트의 수작 〈벨벳 베레모를 쓴 자화상〉(1634)과 함께 어우러져, 동양과 서양, 자연과 인위 등 이항대립의 경계와 틈새라는 주제에 끊임없이 천착해온 이우환의 예술정신을 조명한다.

A solo exhibition #LeeUfan, a pivotal figure in both the Dansaekhwa movement in Korea and the Mono-ha school in Japan, opens today at Hamburger Bahnhof, Berlin. Shedding light on Lee’s artistic journey spanning five decades, this comprehensive retrospective features more than 50 works encompassing painting, sculpture, and installation.

The exhibition includes some of Lee's most significant pieces, including works from his iconic painting series, 𝘍𝘳𝘰𝘮 𝘗𝘰𝘪𝘯𝘵 and 𝘍𝘳𝘰𝘮 𝘓𝘪𝘯𝘦, alongside the 𝘙𝘦𝘭𝘢𝘵𝘶𝘮 series, which explores the fluid relationship between natural materials like stone and earth and industrial materials like steel and canvas.

Notably, the large-scale installation 𝘙𝘦𝘭𝘢𝘵𝘶𝘮 – 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘔𝘪𝘳𝘳𝘰𝘳 𝘙𝘰𝘢𝘥 (2016/2023) is displayed alongside Rembrandt's masterpiece, 𝘚𝘦𝘭𝘧-𝘗𝘰𝘳𝘵𝘳𝘢𝘪𝘵 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘝𝘦𝘭𝘷𝘦𝘵 𝘉𝘦𝘳𝘦𝘵 (1634), from the collection of the Gemäldegalerie, Berlin. This multi-layered dialogue between the two pieces highlights Lee's artistic philosophy, continuously challenging and examining the binary distinctions between East and West, nature and artificiality.
