Art Basel announces the cancellation of its upcoming fair in Hong Kong due to the outbreak and spread of the new coronavirus. Art Basel Hong Kong was scheduled to take place at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre (HKCEC) from March 19 to March 21, 2020.

Following the severe outbreak of the novel coronavirus, which has recently been declared a global health emergency by the World Health Organization, Art Basel has no option but to cancel the upcoming edition of Art Basel Hong Kong. Numerous factors informed this decision, including: fundamental concern for the health and safety of all those working at and attending the fair; the severe logistical challenges facing the build-out and transit of artwork to the show; and the escalating difficulties complicating international travel, all arising as a result of the outbreak of the coronavirus.

Marc Spiegler, Global Director, Art Basel said: ‘Our thoughts are with those affected by the recent coronavirus outbreak around the world. The decision to cancel Art Basel Hong Kong was an extremely difficult one for us. We explored every other possible option before doing so, gathering advice and perspectives from many gallerists, collectors, partners and external experts. We are acutely aware of the important role that the fair plays within the region's cultural scene and for our galleries, both in Asia and across the globe. Our team dedicated extensive time and effort to ensure our show in March would be a success over the course of the past year. Unfortunately, the sudden outbreak and rapid spread of the novel coronavirus radically changed the situation.’

Adeline Ooi, Director Asia, Art Basel said: ‘We are deeply grateful to our exhibitors, partners, and friends all over the world, and especially in Hong Kong, who have stood by our side, lent their support, and shared insights and opinions over the past days and months. The next edition of Art Basel in Hong Kong will take place from March 25 to March 27, 2021.

아트 바젤은 신종 코로나바이러스의 발현과 전염성으로 올해 예정되었던 홍콩쇼를 취소하기로 결정했다. 아트 바젤 홍콩은 원래 2020년 3월 19일부터 21일까지 홍콩 전시컨벤션센터에서 개최될 계획이었다. 신종 코로나 바이러스의 심각한 발발과 이후 세계보건기구 WTO가 국제 비상사태로 선포함에 따라, 아트 바젤은 다음달 예정된 아트 바젤 홍콩을 취소하는 수 밖에 없다고 판단했다. 아트 페어 참여자와 종사자의 건강과 안전 문제; 페어로 배송되는 작품을 이송하고 설치하며 겪게 될 수 있는 심각한 실행상의 문제; 국제 여객이 야기하는 복잡성으로 위한 위험성 증대 가능성 등을 근거로 부득이 취소를 결정하게 되었다.

아트 바젤의 글로벌 디렉터인 마크 스피글러(Marc Spiegler)는 다음과 같이 소회를 전한다. ‘우리의 생각은 지금 전세계에 영향을 끼치고 있는 최근 코로나바이러스의 발생에 영향을 받은 사람들과 연장선상에 있습니다. 아트 바젤 홍콩을 취소하기까지는 매우 어려운 결정이었습니다. 이 결정을 내리고 발표하기 전까지도 다수의 갤러리, 컬렉터, 파트너 및 외부 전문가들의 의견을 수렴하고 조언을 구하면서, 가능한 모든 대안에 대해 살피고 고려했습니다. 우리는 아시아와 전세계에서 참여하는 갤러리들에게 또한 페어 개최지의 문화예술 한복판에서 우리 아트 페어가 담당하는 중요한 역할에 대해 정확하게 알고 있습니다. 우리 팀은 지난 몇 년간 달성해온 만큼의 성공을 이번 3월에도 거둘 수 있도록 방대한 시간과 노력을 바쳐 최선을 다했습니다. 안타깝게도 신종 코로나바이러스의 갑작스러운 발생과 급속한 확산은 이러한 준비에 급격한 변화를 가져왔습니다.”

[홍콩에서 온 보도자료] 둘 <2020 홍콩 아트 바젤>과 함께 <2020 홍콩 아트 센트럴> 홍콩 보건 당국과 오랜 토론 후 취소 결정! 안타깝군요!!] ART CENTRAL 2020 CANCELLED AMIDST PUBLIC HEALTH CONCERNS HONG KONG, 6 February 2020 — Following an in-depth review of market conditions related to the risk to public health from the novel coronavirus (2019-nCov) outbreak, Art Central, upon careful consideration and thorough evaluation, has made the decision to cancel its upcoming edition, which was scheduled to be held from 18 to 22 March 2020.

The uncertainty has made it increasingly untenable to guarantee the safety and well-being of the public. Acting on its obligation to deliver a successful event which is ever dependent on a strong audience, the Fair’s organisers today concede to the simultaneous myriad challenges.

At the time of this release, Art Central 2020 had confirmed the participation of over 80 regional and international galleries – including a record number of Hong Kong-based exhibitors – showing alongside an acclaimed programme of public art, conversations and performance.

A spokesperson for Art Central said, “The decision to cancel Art Central 2020 was certainly not an easy one. However, it has proven to be challenging for us to guarantee a successful event for our gallery partners given the circumstances. We would like to express our gratitude to our partners, supporting organisations and galleries for supporting Art Central. In this difficult time, we want to express our support for Hong Kong, as well as the galleries and artists who have contributed to making the city a world-renowned arts hub.”

With over 37,000 visitors in 2019, Art Central is amongst the largest events of Hong Kong Art Week and a mainstay for local and international visitors participating in the region’s vibrant arts scene.
