어느새 일상의 대지가 된 디지털 세계를 물리 세계와 ‘어떻게 새롭고 빈번하며 차별점이 있는 접점을 만드는가’는 현재중요한 질문 중 하나일 것이다. 가상과 현실, 디지털과 아날로그, 비물질과 물질 간의 경계를 다루어 내는 다양한 기술이발전하는 가운데, 이러한 우리 현실의 풍경과 그 변화는 오늘에 대해 다양한 질문과 의미를 생성하는 창작자에게중요한 질문일 것이다. 여러분과 마주하게 될 작품이자 세계인 '초평오행도(草坪五行島)' 역시 같은 고민의 토대를 공유하고 있다. 이 작품은 팬더믹이라는 혼란의 시기 지속된 고통에 대해, 그리고 이성적 보호막과 브레이크가 미약해 상대에 대한 행위의 한계선이 없는 가상 세계에서의 커뮤니케이션에 누적된 상처에 그 틈을 보호하고 덧대어 줄 수 있는 경험과 사유에 대한 제안이다. 이 시도를 위해 오행과 기복이라는 동양적 우주론에 근거한 과거의 방법론과 메타버스라 호명되었던 비물질 디지털 세계가 결합하였다.

'초평오행도'는 초평도(草抨島)라는 실제 존재하는 섬에 근간한다. 이곳은 임진강 안의 유일한 섬으로 비무장지대(DMZ)에 위치했기에 실존하지만, 방문할 수 없는 혼재된 장소성을 가진다. 이러한 정치· 군사적 논리와 더불어 긴기간 사람의 손길이 닿지않아 생태계가 보존되어 생물학적 가치가 존재하는 긴장과 생명이 함께 의미를 점유하고 있다.

이러한 관계성을 바탕으로 자연과 우주에 대한 전통적 관념인 ‘오행’을 연계한 세계가 바로 '초평오행도'이다.

'초평오행도' 프로젝트는 가상세계 안에 이 섬을 구현하고 그 안에 5개의 기운인 오행을 풀어내어 이곳을 찾는 이에게5가지 경험을 선사한다. 이 5가지 경험은 ‘오행’ 간의 기운을 접하고 관계와 균형에 대한 이야기와 인식, 그리고 바램을접하여 스스로를 돌아보고 관조할 수 있는 계기를 다진다. 그 과정은 우리의 전통, 그리고 세속적 기복 의식의 축에기반한다. 방문자는 이런 5가지 기운에 대한 5개의 행위와 경험을 통해 이성적·과학적 분석과 치료와는 다른 관점의이해와 치유의 여정에 닿을 수 있을 것이다.

초평오행도는 홈페이지로 가서 프로그램을 다운 받은 후 11월 1일부터 온라인 (PC, VR)로 먼저 만날 수 있으며, 오는11월25일(토)부터 11월28일(화)일까지 문래동의 스페이스엑스엑스에서 VR체험과 전시, 오행퍼포먼스, 그리고메타버스와 연동된 공연을 연다.

The question of 'how to create new, frequent, and distinctive points of contact' between the digital world and the physical world, is one of the crucial queries today. Various technologies are advancing that address the boundaries  between virtual and real, digital and analog, and immaterial and material. In such a context, the 'landscape of our reality and its transformations'; pose significant questions for creators who generate diverse inquiries and meanings about the present day. The artwork and also world you will encounter, <Chopyeong Magic Island>, shares the same foundational concerns. 'Chopyeong Magic Island' is a proposition regarding experiences and contemplations that can protect and mend the accumulated wounds from communication in a virtual world, where rational safeguards and brakes are weak and there are no limits to actions towards others, amidst the persistent suffering of this chaotic pandemic era. This piece merges traditional methodologies based on the Eastern cosmology of the Five Movements and mood fluctuations with the immaterial digital world, once referred to as the metaverse, for this endeavor.'Chopyeong Magic Island' is based on an actual island called Chopyeong-do. It is the only island within the Imjin River and, being located in the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ), it possesses a hybrid sense of place: it exists, yet is inaccessible for visits. Alongside its political and military significance, it holds biological value as an ecosystem preserved from human touch over a long period. The world of <Chopyeong Magic Island >, correlating the traditional concept of the 'Five Movements' with nature and cosmos, is based on these relationships.

The <Chopyeong Magic Island > project implements this island in the virtual world, unraveling the Five Movements within, offering visitors five experiences. These five experiences allow visitors to encounter the energies between the ‘Five Movements', stories and perceptions about relationships and balance, and hopes, providing an opportunity for self-reflection and contemplation. This process is grounded on the axis of our tradition and the secular consciousness of emotional fluctuations. Visitors can reach an understanding and journey of healing from a perspective different from rational, scientific analysis and therapy through five actions and experiences related to these five energies. 'Chopyeong Magic Island' is produced with support from the 2023 Metaverse Arts Activity Support Project of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and Arts Council Korea (ARKO).

도로시 엠 윤은 이화여대 조소과와 런던 골드 스미스 대학 순수예술 석사를 졸업한 후 사진, 영상, 설치 등 다양한 매체를 활용하여 상상과 현실, 과거와 현재, 동양과 서양, 현실성과 비현실성을 넘나드는 작업을 진행해왔다. 최근에는 AR, 아바타, 홀로그램, 메타버스 등의 첨단 미디어 매체로 그 영역을 확대하고 있다. 난지 창작스튜디오와 고양창작스튜디오를 나오고, 2019년 스와치 후원으로 2019년 베네치아 비엔날레 전시에 참여하였으며, 2020~21 아르코 예술과 기술융합 선정되었고, 2022년 파라다이스 아트랩과 2023년에 한국문화예술위원회에서 주최하는 메타버스 예술활동'초평오행도'와 온라인 미디어 예술활동 사업 <당신의 요술봉을 찾아드립니다 선정된바 있다.

After graduating from the Department of Sculpture at Ewha Womans University and her Master of Fine Arts from Goldsmiths College in London, Dorothy M. Yoon uses a variety of media such as photography, video, and installation to create works that cross imagination and reality, past and present, East and West, and reality and unreality. has been in progress. Recently, it has been expanding its scope to cutting-edge media such as AR, avatars, holograms, and metaverse. After graduating from Nanji Creative Studio and Goyang Creative Studio, she participated in the 2019 Venice Biennale exhibition sponsored by Swatch in 2019, was selected for Arko (Arts Council of Korea) Art and Technology Convergence in 2020-21, and was hosted by Paradise Art Lab in 2022 and the Arts Council of Korea in 2023. It has been selected for the Metaverse art activity <Chopyeong Magic Island> and the online media art activity project 'Find Your Magic Stick'
